Michael Wilms first studied electrical engineering at the University of Applied Sciences of Aachen/Jülich where he received his Diploma in 1985. Between 1985 and 1988 he worked for Messerschmitt-Bölkow-Blohm (MBB) GmbH in France as an application engineer for simulators of air defense systems. He then studied physics at the University of Bonn, where he received his Diploma in 1994. Joining the group of Prof. Wandelt, he finished his PhD thesis in Physical Chemistry in 1999. After a ten-month postdoctoral period in the same group, he joined the Institute for Microtechnology (IMM GmbH) in Mainz, where he held the position of a project leader in nanotechnology. In 2002 he joined the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research in Mainz where he led the nanomanipulation laboratory that was part of the BMBF - Multifunctional Materials and Miniaturized Devices Center. Since 2003 he is working for the IPF where he heads the Research Technology Division.
