Title Elektrische und mechanische Stimulation kultivierter Herzmuskelzellen
Date 25.09.2002

Abstract Although cardiac myocytes may under appropriate conditions survive for several days outside the body the lack of typical stimuli, such as regular bioelectrical and mechanical activity, leads to dedifferentiation. To delay such dedifferentiation, we developed a new apparatus for maintaining cardiac tissue under conditions of electromechanical activity typical for the heart The core element of the system is an incubation chamber with a pair of electrodes and two axle-shafts driven by an electromotor. A silicon foil for attachment of the myocytes can be clipped to the axle-shafts for computer-coordinated electrical stimulation and mechanical relaxation and re-stretching. Coordinated electrical and mechanical stimulation has many putative applications, e g the conditioning of artificial cardiac tissue for replacement therapy and the simulation of tachyarrhythmias.
