Title Dynamics of spreading and coalescence of drops
Date 01.08.2026
Number 0
Abstract In this chapter, we review recent work on the dynamics of drops in contact with solid substrates. In particular, we explore drop spreading and coalescence under complex conditions. This complexity originates from the surface activity of one of the liquids or the viscoelasticity of the substrate or liquid. These complexities manifest as substantial changes in drop dynamics, primarily in the exponent of the power law describing the radius of the wetted area versus time or an equivalent measure in drop coalescence. For non-identical drops, various additional phenomena are observed, including the formation of a four-phase contact point where the two liquids, the substrate, and the gas phase meet. In the case of viscoelastic merging, this exponent depends non-monotonically on the ratio of the viscoelastic relaxation time to the experimental timescale.
