Title Tailored fibre placement patches for locally reinforcing cutouts in filament-wound composite cylinders
Date 13.04.2026
Number 0
Abstract This study investigates the use of Tailored Fibre Placement (TFP) patches to locally reinforce filament-wound (FW) composite cylinders containing circular cutouts. Cylinders with cutouts and three patch diameters were subjected to axial compression testing and characterised using digital image correlation (DIC). Introducing a 40 mm cutout reduced the load capacity by approximately 10% and generated significant axial and hoop strain concentrations that triggered premature failure at the cutout. All TFP patches suppressed these localised strains by creating a low-deformation zone extending well beyond the patch boundary, restoring the characteristic helical strain pattern of intact cylinders and relocating failure to the cylinder ends. The reinforced specimens recovered the maximum load to levels statistically indistinguishable from the original cylinders and exhibited a consistent 5–6% increase in axial stiffness, regardless of patch diameter. These results demonstrate that small TFP patches can effectively counteract the structural penalty imposed by cutouts, offering a lightweight and practical strategy for locally strengthening composite shells in pressure vessels, pipes, and related applications.
