Supramolecular associates of polyamidines with low molecular weight proton donors

Polyamidines, containing the functional amidine groups in the polymer backbone, can undergo non-covalent ionic interactions. We showed that the polycondensation of aliphatic diamines with triethyl orthoacetate resulting in polyamidines is strongly influenced by acidic catalysts. Due to its strong basic nature, ionic interactions of polyamidines are formed with low molecular weight proton donors and these interactions are thermally stable up to 130 °C. The glass transition temperature of mixtures of polymidines and proton donors increases with the interactions and the Tg is higher in case of aromatic acids as proton donors. The melt viscosity of the blends is also increased many folds substantiating the interactions and the formation of ionic polymer networks. The intramolecular interactions on the other hand are reversible, and they have the ability to break at higher temperatures and can recombine while cooling to room temperature.
