Thin films of block-copolymers undergo phase segregation, resulting in various regular morphologies of lamelar, cylindrical, spherical, or even more complicated structured films. Dimensions of the structures can be determined by molecular dimensions of the block-copolymers and are of the order of 5-100 nm. Using different lithographical approaches these structures may be transformed to regular arrays of submicron channels, pores, or domains of electroconductive, light emitting, magnetic materials, etc.
Coordination of the particular block with low molecular weight molecules on the first step allows to fabricate the organized structures of such a combi-like block copolymer. This morphology is then frozen by cooling the systems below glass transition temperature. On the next step the low molecular weight component is removed by dissolving in a selective solvent leaving voids and channels.
The materials with regular array of nanopores fabricated in this way can be used as membranes or templates. The templates are filled with metals or electroconductive polymers yielding thin films of practical interest for nanodevices and sensors.
