With inspiration on the unique properties of biological systems, we aim at designing artificial antifouling surfaces with exceptional properties. Investigations of naturally occurring self-cleaning surfaces including the characterization of morphological and chemical features, as well as evolutionary and environmental impact studies will provide a deeper understanding on how biological surfaces keep themselves clean and enable the rational development of biomimetic surfaces for biofouling control.
